The impact that academic research has cannot be defined by one single metric. In 2013, BMJ signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA). We did this to show our support for using multiple measures and metrics to portray journals’ impact; moving away from the Impact Factor as a single measure.

The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) is one of the largest subspecialty medical societies in anesthesiology with nearly 5,000 members in 66 countries on 6 continents. We accomplish our mission and vision by addressing the clinical and professional educational needs of physicians and scientists, ensuring excellence in patient care utilizing regional anesthesia and pain medicine, and investigating the scientific basis of the specialty. Our mission is to advance the science and practice of regional anesthesiology and pain medicine to improve patient outcomes through research, education, and advocacy. Our vision is to relieve the global burden of pain.
The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA) was founded in 1980 to further regional anaesthesia in Europe. The first congress was held in Edinburgh in 1982 and since that year the society has gone from strength to strength, with a current membership of over 4,000 throughout Europe and beyond. The society is still growing and has now established a strong track record with 36 Annual Congresses. The scientific standard at the annual ESRA congress is now recognised as one of the best in Europe. ESRA holds several accredited cadaver workshops and courses each year and offers grants schemes as well as online educational content through the ESRA Academy. The European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia & Acute Pain Management (EDRA) was created in 2005 with the goal of establishing standards in regional anaesthesia in Europe. The diploma is intended to widen the activity spectrum of those specialists in anaesthesia who are already in clinical practice and are interested in acquiring additional knowledge in the entire field of regional anaesthesia. ESRA also launched the EDPM, a new diploma in Pain Medicine. The purpose of the European Diploma of Pain Medicine (EDPM) is to harmonize and improve quality standards for safe, independent practice of pain medicine in Europe and elsewhere. The diplomas are intended to be complementary to national standards and enhance the competent, ethical, and professional care of diplomates.
Latin American Society of Regional Anesthesia (LASRA), founded in 1994, exists to support a community of professionals focused on anesthesiology, resuscitation, intensive care, and pain management throughout Latin America. The Society encourages participation in meetings and training programs and places a high focus on medical ethics and the exchange of ideas among professionals to benefit not only its members but the broader patient population.
Asian & Oceanic Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine (AOSRA-PM) was founded in 1989 by a group of anaesthesiologists in Manila. The society exists to promote the study and research of problems in regional anaesthesia and pain relief. AOSRA-PM holds a biennial Congress in odd-numbered years.
The African Society for Regional Anesthesia (AFSRA) is dedicated to improving African patient care by advancing the science and practice of regional anesthesia. AFSRA is an interdisciplinary organization whose members are involved in the provision of regional anesthesia. Founded in 2010, AFSRA is an important voice in the region and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain. The society offers annual congresses and workshops as well as courses and online educational content. AFSRA’s goals include educating professionals, officials, and organizations; promoting well-developed research; and continuing to expand its mission in the public and professional arenas. Through local and regional educational, advisory activities, peer-reviewed publications, and the help of colleagues in Egypt and surrounding African countries, AFSRA makes your voice heard where it needs to be heard.

Dryad enables scientists to validate published findings, explore new analysis methodologies, repurpose data for research questions unanticipated by the original authors, and perform synthetic studies. BMJ has been working with Dryad since 2010.
BMJ is a founding member of COPE (the Committee on Publication Ethics), which provides a forum for publishers and Editors of scientific journals to discuss issues relating to the integrity of the work submitted to or published in their journals.
The EQUATOR Network is an international initiative that seeks to improve the value of medical research literature by promoting transparent, accurate reporting of research studies. BMJ is a sponsor of its activities.
